Monthly Scientific Meets, Journal Clubs, and Guest Lectures
The Centre, right from the inception, started a new activity in the form of monthly Journal Club, Guest Lectures or in-house lectures on a dedicated topic of interest in health professions education. This program is open to all members belonging to Medical/Dental/Nursing Education Units, besides any faculty member working in any institute interested in the field of health professions education. The activity, therefore, fosters the inter-professional and inter-disciplinary approach to health sciences education and research which is a unique feature of SBV.
Workshop on Vision and Mission of Centre of HPE
A workshop was organized on 3rd December 2016 to arrive at a consensus statement on the vision and mission of the Centre, which was attended by 25 participants consisting of core faculty, PGDHPE/M. Phil/ Ph.D. scholars.
Dr. Ganesh Babu, Professor of Surgery and M. Phil candidate presented a Journal Club on 07.01.17. He discussed a research article “Choski B.D. et al - A “Resident-as-Teacher” Curriculum Using a Flipped Classroom Approach: Can a Model Designed for Efficiency Also Be Effective? Academic Medicine, 2014; Vol. 20:1-4”.
Dr UshaCarounanidy, Principal, IGIDS, Dean of Dental Faculty and a candidate for M. Phil presented a Journal Club on 4.02.2017 on a research article entitled “Schiekirka S and Raupach T. A systematic review of factors influencing student ratings in undergraduate medical education course evaluations, BMC Medical Education 2015; 15:30:1-9”.
Guest Lecture by Prof (Dr) S.P. Pani sharing experience of Professional Development of Medicos at Malaysia
The Centre organized a Guest Lecture by Prof (Dr) S.P. Pani on 3.3.2017 on the “Professional Development of Medicos throughout the MBBS course”, sharing his experience at the Quest International University, Perak, Malaysia.
A scientific session was organized by the CHPE on 11.03.2017 in which Dr. M. Shivasakthy, Coordinator of CHPE made a presentation on the concept of Best Evidence Medical Education (BEME). The session was chaired by Prof P.F. Kotur, Dean of SSSMCRI
Guest lecture by Dr Sunita Vagha
The Centre organized a Guest Lecture by Dr SunitaVagha, on 24.3.2017. Dr Vagha is the Director, School for Health Professions Education Research, DattaMeghe Institute of Medical Sciences (DMIMS), Deemed University, Sawangi, Wardha, Maharashtra.
Special lecture on Scholarship in Medical Education
Prof N. Ananthakrishnan, Dean, Research & Allied Health Sciences and core faculty member of the Centre of HPE delivered a special lecture on “Scholarship in Medical Education” on 4/4/2017.
Special Lecture on Emerging areas of educational research in health professions
Prof K R. Sethuraman delivered a special lecture on ‘Emerging areas of educational research in health professions’ on 13/5/2017.
Belling the Bell Curve: Issues in Standard Setting
Prof K.A. Narayan, Professor of Community Medicine & Director of HPE programs discussed the issue of standard setting in education on 10/6/2017.
Guest Visit of Dr D.K. Srinivas, eminent medical educationist
Dr D.K. Srinivas, Former Dean, JIPMER, Former Consultant, RGUHS, Karnataka and a doyen of Medical Education visited the Centre on 29/7/ 2017. Dr Mahalakshmi, Vice Principal and a Ph.D. Scholar made presentation on innovations conducted by SBV (DU) in the examinations reform.
Kirkpatrick model and Review of Microteaching
Dr. Varsha Murthy, Professor, IGIDS discussed ‘The Feasibility of Kirkpatrick model for evaluative research in HPE’ which was followed by another presentation made by Dr. Ganesh Babu, Professor, MGMCRI on ‘ A review of microteaching with special reference in the context of Indian Medical Education’ on 4/11/2017.
Faculty Development across SBV Institutes
The Centre organises and collaborates with all educational units (MEU, DEU and NEU) in organizing faculty development programs for supporting innovative curricula, competency-based medical education, integrated teaching, assessment strategies, microteaching and interactive teaching, development of professionalism, communication skills, patient safety, skill enhancement, utilizing e-learning, simulation pedagogy and many other areas of current interest in health professions education.
CHPE faculty played a key role in organizing institute-wide faculty development for sensitizing PG faculty in introducing Competency Based Learning and Teaching (COBALT), which is a unique experiment in the country which is being copyrighted.
Similarly, they lead or collaborate almost all the faculty development programs organized by the medical education unit from time to time. The Medical Education Unit of MGMCRI is actively engaged in organizing programs right from UG level (example communication skills), Interns (sensitization followed by training in specific areas), Post-graduates (PG Protocol writing, PG Pedagogy, Dissertation writing), Faculty members (Microteaching, assessment strategies) and PG Faculty (CBME, Multi-Source Feedback and e-portfolio approach). Similarly, Dental Education and Nursing Education Units are involved in Faculty Development Activities which are supported by the CHPE Faculty.
Workshops for training in research methodology
The Centre faculty are actively engaged in training the residents and M.Phil and Ph.D. scholars in organizing Research Methodology Workshops. A special series of Workshops consisting of 25 weeks with extensive ‘hands-on (carrying 10 credit points) has been introduced by the Deanery of Research & Allied Health Sciences for training the Residents, M Phil and Ph D scholars across the constituent colleges. Two such programs have been held during the last year.
Faculty Development, Extension and Consultancy Activities:
The Centre of Health Professions Education has been organizing workshops, seminars and conferences at the National Level on various issues that are not only topical, but also futuristic.
The faculty have actively participated in several national and international conferences, delivered orations and key note address/guest lectures on many issues in medical education. Prof B.V. Adkoli is the member of Executive Committee of the Academy of Health Professional Education of India. Prof N Ananthakrishnan has served as Chairman of the Post Graduate Expert Committee appointed by the MCI to reform PG Medical Education.
CHPE Faculty serving as Resource Persons for National Workshops and Conferences:
The Centre faculty have pioneered in the implementation of Competency Based Learning and Training (COBALT) for PG Training at MGMCRI. The faculty team comprised of Prof K.R. Sethuraman, Prof N. Ananthakrishnan, Prof B. V. Adkoli, Prof P. Karthikeyan, HOD, Centre of ENT and Dr Jagan Mohan, Head, Informatics organized Faculty Development programs for the HODs of MGMCRI and MGMCRI to sensitize them in the implementation of Competency Based Learning and Training on 14.03.2016, 21.03. 2016 and 22.03.2016. These workshops addressed the issues of defining Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs), Multi-Source Feedback, and E-Portfolios, respectively.
The faculty have served as Resource Persons, Chairpersons or Guest Speakers at various National Conferences.
